Alan Shearer reacts to ‘big’ Dan Burn news at Newcastle
Newcastle United’s historic 2024–25 season has culminated with an award for one of their most recognisable figures.
Eddie Howe‘s side will be back in the Champions League next season after beating Aston Villa to fifth place in the Premier League table via goal difference, and have a big summer of transfers planned.
Newcastle have already confirmed the signings of Malaga’s Antonio Cordero and Valkhtang Salia from Dinamo Tbilisi this summer, but further additions are expected ahead of their return to Europe’s elite.
The Magpies are big fans of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and have also turned their attention to Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta this summer, but both targets won’t get into Howe’s starting XI without a fight.

Newcastle announce end-of-season Dan Burn award
Both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman were put through the wringer with injuries last season, with the Magpies’ club captain failing to get on the pitch whatsoever and Botman limited to just 10 appearances.
Botman‘s absence at left centre-back was seldom felt by Newcastle though as 33-year-old Burn slotted into the role superbly, and he scored the opening goal in their Carabao Cup Final victory over Liverpool.
Burn’s form across 46 matches in all competitions saw the defender rewarded with an England debut under Thomas Tuchel, and an individual accolate has followed Newcastle’s first trophy in 70 years.
Newcastle took to Instagram (23 June) to announce Burn had won their fans’ Player of the Season award, and in a post liked by both Joelinton and Alan Shearer, they said: “He’s from Blyth!
“As voted for by you, Big Dan Burn has won the Player of the Season award for the 24/25 season.”
Newcastle should be in no rush to find Dan Burn replacement
Football Insider Verdict
Although additions like Guehi and Scalvini would undoubtedly add quality to Howe’s backline options at St. James’ Park, the form of Burn and his partner Fabian Schar last season has Newcaslte in good hands.
Schar’s form was redward with a contract extension in April, and Burn making his England debut little over a year before the 2026 World Cup suggests that Tuchel is keen to see him keep his place next term.
Guehi remains on Newcastle’s radar this summer as the England defender approaches the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, but at present he’s far more likely to partner – rather than replace – Burn in Howe’s first-choice XI.
