Arsenal fans react on Twitter to stunning Oxlade-Chamberlain display
By Matt Farr
Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the fifth goal as Arsenal thumped West Ham 5-1 on Saturday night – and Arsenal fans on Twitter were delighted.
Alexis Sanchez was the stand-out performer for the Gunners, netting a superb hat-trick on what was a forgettable day for West Ham.
The Hammers looked shell-shocked as Arsenal ran riot at the Olympic Stadium, and offered little response to the Gunners attacking play.
Sanchez unselfishly allowed Mesut Ozil to open the scoring for Arsenal in the 24th minute, but did not score again until Sanchez’s 72nd minute effort – highlighting their early wastefulness in front of goal.
However, Sanchez quickly added a second just eight minutes later, before substitute Andy Carroll pulled one back for the home side.
Oxlade-Chamberlain swiftly doused any West Ham hopes of a comeback by adding Arsenal’s fourth goal, before Sanchez completed the rout – and his hat-trick – just four minutes from time.
While it was Sanchez who took the highest praise, it was 23-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain that had a point to prove.
His recent displays had come under fire from Gunners fans, who believed Alex Iwobi was a better choice to start the game. However, after one forgettable moment in the first-half, the Englishman won back some support.
Here’s what the Gunners fans though of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s display on Twitter:
The win saw Arsenal fully capitalise on Manchester City’s dropped points from their defeat to Chelsea earlier in the day.
They moved into second, three points behind league leaders Chelsea. They are now four points ahead of Tottenham in fifth.
The win also extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run away from home, with the Gunners yet to lose on their travels this season. In fact, their only defeat of the Premier League campaign so far came on the opening day when they lost 4-3 to Liverpool.
