Arsenal star Declan Rice responds as Anthony Gordon sends Newcastle message

Anthony Gordon sent a message to “every single person” at Newcastle while celebrating their 2-1 victory over Liverpool despite being suspended on Sunday.

The Magpies broke a 70-year stint without domestic silverware at Wembley Stadium on 16 March, beating the Reds in 90 minutes of back-and-forth football in the Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe’s side were forced to claim the win without Gordon, having been sent off against Brighton in the semi-finals, but that did not stop him lifting the trophy after goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

Isak was clearly auditioning for a summer move to Liverpool, firing past Alisson with ease just seven minutes into the second half, meaning Federico Chiesa’s goal was nothing more than a consolation.

Taking to Instagram [16 March], Gordon wrote: “I’m so proud of and so happy for every single person involved with this club. Winners, first of many.”

Arsenal’s Declan Rice commented on the post, saying: “Congratulations, bro,” with a ‘top’ emoji, with Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White replying: “Congrats, brother.”

Cup victory sparks fears over Eddie Howe’s future at St James’ Park

Football Insider verdict

Howe has completed the impossible with the Magpies, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, and beating one of the best teams in the world in the process.

This has, obviously, caused rival fans, all coming together on the international stage, to want the 53-year-old as Thomas Tuchel‘s successor once the German’s time is up with the England squad.

Eddie Howe is a much-loved figure at Newcastle United.

Newcastle have gone from escaping relegation to qualifying for Champions League football and trying for a top-four finish in the Premier League, all while lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley in just three years.

Some supporters are already prepared to crown Howe as the club’s best-ever manager, which after such a short time in charge at St James’ Park, is an incredible honour.

He is clearly building something special with the Magpies, but if he has even the slightest of dreams about representing his country on the biggest stage, it could be hard for Howe to turn down the England job.
