Arsenal walking ‘dangerous tightrope’ after completing record-breaking deal
Arsenal supporters will vent their anger at ticket prices if the club fail to win a trophy this season.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Arsenal announced an increase in ticket prices for next season.
Season tickets will go up 3.9%, whilst games in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Champions League will be priced between £90 and £168.
The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League table, and have a chance of winning all four major trophies on offer this season.
Arsenal ‘in very competitive market’ over ticket prices
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes fans won’t care about ticket prices if Arsenal win the Premier League.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness warns ticket prices will be “attacked” the moment Arsenal start losing games.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, it’s difficult, as I say, if Arsenal win the league this year, nobody will mind what the season tickets cost next year. Everyone will be happy.
“It’s the minute you have a blip, and you start losing, or if they were to finish second this year, there would be uproar about ticket prices. So it’s all about keeping the fans happy by winning on the pitch in this case. But it’s a tough road to go for Arsenal because they’re in a very competitive market.
“We just talked about [Bukayo] Saka at £300,000 a week. That player salary machine keeps needing to be fed. And that’s where the money goes. We always call it the prune juice effect of money going into the club and straight out into the player’s car park and that’s where the money goes through into a club.
“That’s where the cost is today in football. And still Arsenal are putting together a squad, they’re paying to keep it there, and as long as the results keep coming, then the fans will be happy. But as I say, it’s a dangerous tightrope because the minute you start faltering, that’s the first thing that is attacked is the prices.”
