Aston Villa could complete defender signing ‘very quickly’ after source’s Gomez update today – Whelan

Noel Whelan has claimed Aston Villa will move “swiftly” to secure a new centre-back after a blow in their pursuit of Joe Gomez.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Villa boss Steven Gerrard is “not messing about in this window”.

A Liverpool source today (25 January) told Football Insider that Jurgen Klopp has decided that Gomez is staying at Anfield and all offers will be refused.

When asked for his thoughts on the Gomez deal collapsing, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “That would have taken a big bid in this last week of the window.

“That won’t be an easy one to fix for Aston Villa, but I’m sure they can.

“Right now, there’s a lot of clubs working really hard to get these deals done because the clock is really ticking.

“The one thing we do know is Aston Villa have done their business very swiftly and efficiently in this window.

“They won’t hold anything back with their targets, they’ll put what they feel is fair on the table. And if it’s accepted, a defender deal will get done very quickly indeed.

“Gerrard and Villa aren’t messing about in this window.”

Aston Villa are in the market for a centre-back after Axel Tuanzebe cut short his season-long loan spell at the club to join Napoli earlier this month.

Gomez has slipped to fourth in the centre-back pecking order at Liverpool this season after missing most of last term with a knee injury.
