Aston Villa could tie up Diego Carlos deal ‘quickly’ after journalist’s ‘big’ update – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Aston Villa could have a new centre-back in place “before pre-season” amid reported interest in James Tarkowski and Diego Carlos.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Steven Gerrard is looking to sign an upgrade on Ezri Konsa, 24, this summer.

According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein (25 May), Aston Villa are exploring the possibility of signing Sevilla star Carlos, 29, this summer.

The report claims free agent Tarkowski, 29, is also a prominent target for Gerrard’s men.

Aston Villa have already been active in the transfer market ahead of next season, turning Philippe Coutinho’s loan spell into a permanent move and signing French midfielder Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer.

Whelan insisted Gerrard will be looking to sign “big players” this summer after already completing two ambitious captures.

“I think clubs as ambitious as Villa will always be looking to upgrade,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“I think Konsa is a player they will be looking to improve on this summer. Getting someone next to Tyrone Mings may be the priority.

“Gerrard wants options. He wants a big squad with lots of competition and opportunities to rotate.

“He needs big players also. He’s got one in Coutinho now, he’s got Watkins. Now he needs another in the spine of the team and Carlos could be that.

“Aston Villa aren’t scared of getting signings in quickly.

If they truly want him, he could be in place before pre-season even starts.”
