Aston Villa expected 4-2-3-1 v Newcastle: Attacking duo axed
By Amir Mir
Aston Villa could make two changes for their Championship clash against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday night.
Steve Bruce’s side have been in horrendous form of late, losing their last four matches and picking up only one point in the league in 2017.
They lost 3-1 at home to Barnsley in midweek and now face the stern test of overcoming Rafa Benitez’ side who top the table.
Birkir Bjarnason and Gary Gardner could come into the starting XI with attacking duo Scott Hogan and Jack Grealish axed to the bench.
As a result, Kodjia, who has netted 11 goals this term, might start up front on his own with Conor Hourihane playing in behind him.
Furthermore, Bjarnason and Albert Adomah could be played out wide and be tasked to provide the service and help end Villa’s barren run.
The Midlands club have conceded nine goals in their last four matches and Bruce could possibly opt to play two midfielders in front of the back four.
The combative duo of Gary Gardner and Henri Lansbury might sit deep, with Mile Jedinak touch and go to play, having missed the last five encounters.
Despite producing a poor display during Villa’s last game, Jordan Amavi could still keep his place in the side as Neil Taylor makes his comeback from injury.
It means Bruce may decide to stick with the same back four that conceded three goals last time out as Villa search for some form and consistency.
