Aston Villa failed to sign Joe Gomez & a second defender – sources

Aston Villa failed to sign Joe Gomez and Lutsharel Geertruida during the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Liverpool centre-back had been mentioned as a “potential target” for Villa.

The 27-year-old’s versatility made him an option for Unai Emery, as Gomez can play right back as well as centre back.

There was also talk of interest in right-back Geertruida, but he ended up moving to RB Leipzig instead.

Villa missed out on both defensive targets, which was a blow to Emery considering the Matty Cash’s injury situation.

The 27-year-old has missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury, but he has recently returned to full training.

Aston Villa could’ve given Joe Gomez more game time

Gomez was linked with moves to both Villa and Newcastle during the summer transfer window, but neither club were able to strike a deal with their Premier League rivals.

The England international has been a fringe player under Arne Slot this season, making only three appearances in all competitions this season.

Gomez has only played one full match, with his other two games being cameo appearances from the bench.

Aston Villa

Even though Villa missed out on the Liverpool star in summer, Football Insider revealed the club are continuing to monitor his situation.

The central defender is under contract at Anfield until 2027, but Football Insider revealed he informed Liverpool that he wanted to leave the club if their asking price was met.
