‘Thank the Lord’ – Aston Villa fans react as attacker is omitted v Bolton

By Abigail Withey

Aston Villa fans have expressed their delight on Twitter after centre-forward Gabby Agbonlahor was completely omitted from Steve Bruce’s matchday squad to face Bolton on Saturday afternoon.

The club announced the confirmed starting XI and substitutions on their official Twitter account an hour before the game started, and popular duo Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia were named in the line-up over the 30-year-old.

Agbonlahor was recently revealed as being fit and ready for selection to face Phil Parkinson’s side after suffering a small groin injury.

Fans were pleased not to see the Englishman’s name on the confirmed team sheet on at the weekend with most supporters claiming they were happy that he wasn’t on the bench either.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The attacker has been at Aston Villa for over a decade as he moved up from the academy back in 2005 and has been a key figure at Villa Park ever since.

This season the centre-forward has only featured in four Championship fixtures against Hull City, Cardiff, Brentford and also Reading where he scored his only goal of the campaign so far.

His efforts haven’t been needed recently as boss, Bruce, has kept the same squad for the the past three fixtures which has led to three successive wins.
