Aston Villa laying the groundwork for big-money Douglas Luiz windfall after source’s update – pundit
Noel Whelan has backed Aston Villa to “protect their asset” by handing Douglas Luiz a fresh contract this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested renewed terms for the 24-year-old would keep a big-money fee for his services a possibility in the coming seasons.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (3 August) that Aston Villa are in advanced talks to agree a new contract with Luiz after a club U-turn.

It is understood that the Midlands giants had been willing to let the Brazil international go earlier this summer amid interest from rivals and after failing to land their top midfield targets.
Villa rejected a £30million bid for Luiz from mega-rich Newcastle earlier this year.
The former Man City midfielder, who cost Villa a reported £15million, has made 111 appearances since joining the Villa Park club.
Whelan insisted Luiz is “an important part” of Steven Gerrard’s side.
“They’re keeping him because he’s done quite well over the last couple of seasons,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“There have been a few names bandied around as potential new signings in that midfield area, but when you watch him play, he’s done a good job.
“He’s an important part of their team.
“But with one year left and no replacement coming in, you have to go out there and give him a new deal.
“It protects that asset and keeps the money Villa could potentially demand for him on the table.
“They’re protecting their investment and it’s a good move.”

Luiz made 35 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa last season, including 31 starts in the Premier League.
The Brazillian will compete for a first-team berth with summer signing Boubacar Kamara.
