Aston Villa news: Pundit ‘shocked’ after source’s John McGinn reveal – ‘you’re joking’

Aston Villa must keep John McGinn at the club this summer as he is irreplaceable.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.

A Villa source has told Football Insider (20 June) that the club will listen to offers this summer for McGinn and he is far from an untouchable despite being a nailed-on starter during his four years at the club.

The source explained that McGinn is not regarded as the easiest player to manage and the newly-appointed QPR manager Michael Beale was said to have had tense relationships with a number of senior Villa stars – McGinn among them – last season.

Kenny claims Gerrard won’t put up for any behind-the-scenes issues.

“You’re joking. I’m not sure about that,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“McGinn is one of Villa’s best players, he plays every week. I would be very surprised if they sold him.

“If he is difficult to manage then maybe that is the reason they are trying to get him out but he is an unbelievable player for me.

“He’s a key player but if he’s not a good bloke behind the scenes, I can see Gerrard not taking that kind of rubbish.

“It is a bit of a shock to hear that to be honest.”

McGinn started 35 of Aston Villa’s 38 Premier League games in the 2021-22 season as a disappointing end to the season saw the club finish 14th.

The Glasgow-born ace moved to the club from Hibs in the summer of 2018 and has made 147 appearances across all competitions.

In other news, Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign a player after a record offer.
