Aston Villa tipped to complete Joe Gomez signing after source’s £30m update – pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted Joe Gomez would be a “great capture” for Aston Villa this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, conceded the 24-year-old’s injury history will be of slight concern to any interested parties.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (21 February) that Steven Gerrard has made Liverpool star Joe Gomez his number one priority ahead of the summer window as he plots another big-name Aston Villa signing.

The Midlands giants saw a January move for the defender rejected, with Jurgen Klopp unwilling to sign off on his departure mid-season.

Gomez is out of contract in June 2024, meaning Liverpool could be forced to accept an offer of around £30million this summer.

When asked if £30million is a fair valuation, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely, that’s a very fair price for a quality player.

“They’d be getting a very good player. As well as someone who is experienced and ready to go in the Premier League.

“The problem, however, is keeping him fit. Can he stay fit for a whole season? If he can, then there’s a massive chance of Aston Villa breaking into that top six.

“He’s a solid player. Liverpool would be sad to see him go, there’s no doubt, he’s been a very good servant for them – both at centre-back and full-back.

“He’d be a great capture for any side outside the top six – he could be a leader for those sorts of teams.”

Gomez made his first Liverpool start in 15 months on Saturday (19 February) as Klopp’s side defeated Norwich.

The England international missed 39 games last term with a knee injury.
