Bayern Munich race Liverpool and Newcastle to sign James Trafford – sources
Bayern Munich are rivalling Liverpool and Newcastle United in a bid to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Vincent Kompany will look to make Trafford a “priority”, sources say, after being confirmed as the Bundesliga giants’ new manager.
Football Insider first revealed on 27 May that Liverpool and Newcastle are set to go head-to-head to land the 21-year-old Burnley stopper once the transfer window reopens.
Trafford has drawn the attention of several top clubs following the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship, with the Lancashire club placing a price tag of around £20million on his head.
The England U-21 international is under contract until 2027 after making the £19million move from Manchester City last summer.
Liverpool could sign James Trafford to replace Caoimhin Kelleher
Trafford could be heading to Germany for the European Championships this summer after Gareth Southgate named the goalkeeper in his training squad ahead of the tournament.
The goalkeeper had an underwhelming first campaign with Burnley after being dropped for the final 10 games of the season, having kept just two clean sheets in 28 Premier League appearances.
That hasn’t stopped Kompany registering an interest in taking his former stopper to Bayern with him this summer.
But the German club are likely to face competition from Liverpool and Newcastle for the Englishman as the Premier League duo look to add to their goalkeeping options.
Both sides view him as a top second-choice option, with Alisson and Nick Pope commanding starting berths at the top-flight clubs.

The Reds are scouring the market for a potential replacement for backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher after Football Insider revealed last month the Irishman is planning to push for a move away from Anfield this summer.
Newcastle are looking to provide more cover for Pope after the club have announced Loris Karius will leave St James’ Park when his contract expires later this month.
In other news, Liverpool have been told to accept a “£100m” offer for Mohamed Salah.
