Report: Benitez expectations revealed after £40m Newcastle transfer claim in takeover talks

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is expecting to be backed in the upcoming January transfer window regardless of whether the club has undergone a takeover, according to a report.

The Northern Echo claim on their website that the Spanish boss believes that he is still owed funds from the summer transfer window by current owner Mike Ashley, and that if a deal for the sale of the Magpies has not gone through then those finances should be made available to reinforce his squad.

It had been claimed that proposed new owner, British businesswoman Amanda Staveley, would have been willing to back Benitez with a kitty in the region of £40million, with the Northern Echo insisting Ashley would offer significantly less as takeover talks drag on.

However, while an agreement in the negotiations is said to be closer than it was some weeks ago, the report states that it would not be finalised until well into the January window, and as such Benitez has built up a broad shortlist of potential targets dependent on the financial support he receives.

Should funds be limited, it is suggested the manager could rely solely on loan deals, with the Chronicle claiming he has kept a close eye on Liverpool trio Danny Ings, Daniel Sturridge and Andrew Robertson ahead of January.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are said to have launched an official move for a Premier League striker.
