‘I was fortunate’ – Rangers mainstay makes admission after win v Motherwell

Rangers mainstay Danny Wilson believes his strike in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Motherwell is the “best” goal he has scored in his career as it rounded off a perfect birthday for the Ibrox star.

Wilson scored the opening goal with a left-footed strike early in the second-half before Alfredo Morelos grabbed the Gers’ second twenty minutes later to secure the win.

The former Hearts defender was delighted to see his shot hit the back of the net as he picked up a goal, three points, a clean sheet and man of the match on his 26th birthday.

“I would like to think I do that every day in training but I don’t! I was fortunate it went in tonight but more importantly the goal came at a good time for us,” Wilson said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“I would say that’s the best goal I’ve ever scored; I don’t think I have ever scored any real screamers or anything like that, mostly headers if they do go in.

“I am just happy it went in tonight and it was important to get back to winning ways because we have been disappointing the last two games.”

Wilson has scored three times in recent weeks for the Light Blues and impressed in the win over Stephen Robinson’s side at Ibrox on Wednesday.

The former Liverpool defender struggled for game time earlier in the campaign under Pedro Caixinha but has been a mainstay since the Portuguese was replaced by Graeme Murty in the hotseat.

The defender’s contract is up at the end of the campaign and his recent performances will likely have boosted his chances of an extended deal at Ibrox.

The Gers next game is against Old Firm rivals Celtic on Saturday afternoon at Celtic Park in the final round of fixtures before the winter break begins.
