Ray Clemence delivers verdict on Gerrard to Rangers appointment
Former Liverpool legend Ray Clemence has delivered his verdict on Steven Gerrard’s imminent appointment as Rangers manager.
BBC Sport is reporting that the former Liverpool captain is set to be announced as the new Gers boss on Friday afternoon, and Clemence is under no illusions of the job that Gerrard will have on his hands.
“Congratulations and good luck to Steven Gerrard on taking on the Glasgow Rangers job. A big challenge in his first job,” Clemence said on his personal Twitter account.
Gerrard is a bit of a left-field choice to take over as Gers boss, but director of football Mark Allen has chosen the managerial rookie to begin life at the deep end of football, in a city where to finish second will be judged as a failure.
Football Insider verdict
Clemence does at least grasp the magnitude of the situation that Gerrard is going to face when he takes over at Ibrox. It is a huge job, and one which he can’t underestimate under any circumstances. Some pundits in England seem to think that the Liverpool-Everton rivalry which Gerrard has dealt with for years is similar to the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers which he will now be thrust into, but it’s not. It is much more high-pressured in Glasgow, where even a draw can become a crisis for a team, never mind a defeat. Gerrard has a lot to learn about managing and Ibrox isn’t always the best place for a rookie manager to learn, but the board at Ibrox must be confident that Gerrard is the man to take them forward, as if he fails then their days will be numbered as well, as fans will demand answers if a proper challenge to Celtic isn’t mounted next season.
