Kris Boyd: This 37-year-old will provide an X-factor at Rangers

Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd thinks Steven Gerrard will bring an “X-factor” to Rangers if the Gers appoint the Liverpool icon as manager.

According to ESPN, 37-year-old Gerrard has been offered a four-year deal to take the reins at Ibrox and an announcement could come as early as this week.

Boyd thinks it is a “blockbuster” move for the Gers and thinks the appointment will create new interest in Scottish football.

“It’s a blockbuster. There’s a lot of things that need to be sorted out but there’s no doubt Steven Gerrard will bring that X-factor to Scottish football,” Boyd said during Sky Sports 1’s live build-up to Sunday’s Old Firm clash.

The Liverpool Under-18s boss’ appointment seems to have won backing from Gers fans and has already caused a noticeable spike in media interest in the Gers since news broke earlier in the week.

Football Insider verdict:

There’s little doubt that the talks between the Gers and Gerrard have already captured the imagination of many and the prospect of the Liverpool icon going head-to-head with his former Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers adds an interesting wrinkle to it. Appointing Gerrard will be a huge gamble for the Gers but if Derek McInnes is as good as it gets for the Light Blues when it comes to recruiting a ‘proven’ manager then taking a punt on someone like Gerrard could prove to be worth it.
