Bruno Fernandes should be banned for Man United v Chelsea as new claim emerges – expert

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Bruno Fernandes should be banned for Man United when they face Chelsea tomorrow night (28 April).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Fernandes should have been sent off during his side’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday (23 April).

With just less than 1`5 minutes to go, the 27-year-old stamped on Nuno Tavares’ ankle seconds after he had played a pass to a teammate.

Craig Pawson had a great viewing angle and was quick to show him a yellow card and VAR did not feel it was a clear and obvious error so did not intervene.

A red card would have seen Fernandes banned for Man United’s next three games starting with the visit of Chelsea.

They then host Brentford next week (2 May) before travelling to Brighton & Hove Albion five days later.

“It could have been a red,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“When you look back at it, he was lucky not to get a red. It was about the number of fouls Fernandes was doing too.

“I thought Fernandes was very poor, he was giving the ball away, continuously fouling. He’s going through a rough patch at Man United.

“It was a weird time to give him a new contract, I didn’t see the rush.”

Fernandes was handed a new four-year deal by Man United at the beginning of this month (1 April).

The Portugal international has 14 goal contributions this season but has not chipped in with a goal or an assist since the middle of February.
