Bruno Guimaraes, Jacob Murphy react to Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon after Man United
Newcastle stars Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Murphy responded to a message from Anthony Gordon after demolishing Man United.
Having not featured for the Magpies for six weeks, thanks to injury and suspension, Gordon made his return to the side with a cameo off the bench against the Red Devils.
Barcelona target Sandro Tonali opened the scoring for the home side before Alejandro Garnacho equalised for United.
After a tight opening the proceedings, Newcastle took control of the match, as two goals from Harvey Barnes and Arsenal transfer target Guimaraes’ fourth strike of the season propelled the Magpies to a dominant 4-1 victory.
The result puts the North Eastern team in pole position to qualify for the Champions League next season, as they sit fourth, just a point behind in third Nottingham Forest with a game in hand.
Anthony Gordon tells Newcastle fans its ‘good to be back’
Despite being one of their top performers this season, Newcastle have barely noticed the absence of Gordon, thanks to brilliant performances from understudy Harvey Barnes, and the revitalised Murphy.
That said, the former Everton man’s return will undoubtedly be a major boost as the Premier League nears its conclusion.
Having featured from the bench against United, Gordon posted two photos to Instagram, captioned: “Good to be back with the boys.”
Murphy responded with a crown emoji, whilst club captain Guimaraes told the 24-year-old: “Nice to have u back bro”.
Newcastle eye Premier League title push next season
Football Insider Verdict
Newcastle and Man United’s meeting on Sunday (13 April) perfectly epitomised the two different directions the clubs are heading in.
Whilst the Red Devils continue to falter, now sitting 14th in the Premier League table in spite of spending more than most clubs on the planet could even dream of, the Magpies are looking to consolidate their attempts to qualify for Champions League football.
Much of the debate prior to Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool was related to how it may affect their push to qualify for Europe’s premier tournament next season.
2024/25 Premier League stats | Gordon |
Appearances | 27 |
Starts | 25 |
Goals | 6 |
Assists | 5 |
Minutes | 2,134 |
Now, however, it is clear the Magpies have the quality and importantly, the squad depth, to compete on multiple fronts.
With the summer transfer window creeping closer, the next question surely has to be, with a few new signings, can Newcastle continue to improve? If they can, the next step will surely be a battle for the 2025/26 Premier League title.
