Bundesliga club suggest they want Leeds first teamer next season
By Richard Parks
Hamburg sporting director Jens Todt has suggested that Pierre-Michel Lasogga could return to the club next season.
The recruitment chief at the Bundesliga outfit paved the way for the striker, 25, to be back in their squad in 2018-19 when his loan spell at Leeds United ends.
The former Germany Under-21 international has made an instant impact at the Championship giants, scoring twice on his debut against Burton Albion.
Hamburg are reportedly paying around £35,000-a-week of his £50,000-a-week salary during his season at Leeds, which means they would struggle to buy him next summer if they don’t secure promotion.
Lasogga slipped down the pecking order at Hamburg and only scored twice in 22 appearances last season.
Todt admitted a loan move for the forward was inevitable but he opened the door for a return to the club, where his contract runs until the summer of 2019.
“It always happens with a player who doesn’t get enough games, one can think about a loan together,” Todt told German news outlet SportBild. “With Pierre now it’s exactly what one expects to happen.
“The player gets games, flourishes and possibly returns well.”
Leeds have started the season strongly and top the Championship after the opening eight rounds of matches.
Thomas Christiansen’s men also defeated top-flight side Burnley in the League Cup on Tuesday to secure a last-16 place against Leicester.
