Burnley next manager candidates revealed as Scott Parker faces axe, one is ex-Liverpool boss

Burnley are in seriously poor form right now as the threat of relegation from the Premier League becomes clearer with each passing week.

The Clarets were almost unstoppable as they racked up 100 Championship points last season, but things have not gone to plan on their return to the top-flight so far.

Scott Parker’s side picked up a respectable three wins and one draw in their first nine league matches of the campaign, yet things have taken a turn for the worse recently, with five successive defeats to leave them 19th.

Their latest loss came on home turf at the hands of Crystal Palace as Daniel Munoz bagged a first-half winner, with four points now separating Burnley and 17th-placed Leeds after their win over Chelsea.

Parker’s job hangs in the balance as Turf Moor chiefs weigh up what comes next, and they will no doubt have a list of candidates who could be approached should he be sacked soon.

Gary O’Neil favourite to be next Burnley boss with Brendan Rodgers also in the running

Parker was surprisingly linked with the Tottenham job at the end of last season before they appointed Thomas Frank to replace Ange Postecoglou.

Football Insider revealed in October that the Clarets had no plans to sack Parker, but they have picked up just six points from the 21 on offer since then, while scoring just three goals across their last five games.

He may still have some credit in the bank from the job he did last season, but if he is relieved of his duties, the bookmakers have former Wolves and Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil as the favourite to succeed him at 7/4.

Man United hero Michael Carrick is next up at 2/1, while ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who recently resigned from his job as Celtic boss, is close behind at 3/1 to be the next man in the Turf Moor dugout.

Two more out-of-work former Premier League stars make up the top five favourites, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming in at 4/1, and Steven Gerrard at 6/1.

Parker’s poor Premier League record makes Burnley sack seem inevitable

This is now Parker’s third stint in charge of a Premier League side, after previously leading both Fulham and Bournemouth to respective promotions from the Championship.

He was unable to keep the Cottagers up as they finished 18th in the Premier League in 2020-21, and was relieved of his duties just weeks after the end of the campaign.

Parker’s Premier League managerial record

The 45-year-old failed to even make it that far with the Cherries as he was sacked after only four games of the campaign and ironically replaced by O’Neil at the Vitality Stadium.

His record in charge of Premier League games certainly does not make for great reading, and it seems inevitable that he will leave Turf Moor soon unless a clear improvement is made before the new year.
