Caixinha makes emphatic decision on future of Rangers 25-year-old – report
By Derek Smithson
Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has been informed by manager Pedro Caixinha that he can go out on loan next season, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claim that the 25-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements at the club and has been unable to impress during the pre-season training.
It is understood that the Scotsman will now be made to train with the Under-20s and Caixinha has reached the conclusion that he should be moved on from Ibrox.
The report details that several clubs are interested in signing the available central midfielder Halliday and he will now train with the Gers youth team until he finds a new team.
Portuguese boss Caixinha is overseeing a huge overhaul of his squad in the summer and has already seen eight news faces join, but that means a number of player are set to depart too.
Rangers are looking to improve on their third-placed league finish last season and a new-look team will be trying to close the huge gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic.
Halliday was a regular in the starting line-up last season, particularly under the management of Mark Warburton.
The defensive midfielder made 42 appearances across all competitions and managed to chip in with five goals.
He was part of the side that cruised to the Scottish Championship title in the 2015/16 campaign, but was unable to replicate his best form in the top flight.
Halliday is a lifelong Rangers fan and has made 90 appearances for his boyhood club, but may have played his last game for them.
Football Insider verdict:
Rangers fans could never question the commitment of tough tackling midfielder Halliday and he has produced some good moments for the club. However, the 25-year-old has fallen just short of the expected standards and it’s only right he is moved on to help the Gers progress. They have already recruited Ryan Jack and Carlos Pena to help bolster the midfield options, meaning Halliday would only fall down the pecking order. Rangers need to step it up a gear if they are to even challenge Celtic and unfortunately that means getting rid of players such as Halliday from their squad. He should pursue a permanent move away from Ibrox and try reignite his career elsewhere.
In other Rangers transfer news, they have been installed the favourites to land a four-time Premier League winner.
