Calvin Bassey could sign ‘massive’ deal after Sky’s £25m Rangers reveal – Hutton
Alan Hutton has claimed Calvin Bassey could sign a bumper new deal at Rangers but admitted the Ibrox club will find it “extremely difficult” to keep the 22-year-old.
The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the youngster will want increased terms and promises of ambition in order to stay at the club.
An Ibrox source told Football Insider on Saturday (21 May) that Rangers are preparing to offer Bassey a “massive” pay hike with an extension to his contract – which is set to expire in May 2024.
It is understood that any new deal would take the former Leicester defender into the top bracket of earners at the Glasgow club.
According to Sky Sports (26 May), Aston Villa are among a number of Premier League clubs to have made enquiries about Bassey – who is reportedly open to talks despite being “settled” at Rangers.
The broadcaster report that the Gers would be looking for a Scottish record £25million-plus fee in order to part with the Italian-born youngster.
Hutton claimed interest from top English sides could make a renewal difficult.
“It was always going to be extremely difficult to tie him down,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“Especially when you look at some of the teams interested in him. They’re very good Premier League teams trying to build something in their own right.
“That being said, if you can offer Bassey something he thinks is acceptable – both in terms of money and trophy ambitions – he could easily play at Rangers for another couple of seasons.
“He’s only going to get better with age – and he’s already playing at a fantastic level.“

Bassey joined Steven Gerrard’s Rangers from Leicester in 2020 after joining on a pre-contract deal.
The versatile star can play at centre-back or left-back.
