Calvin Bassey: Pundit slams ‘delusional’ Rangers after £25m Sky update

Rangers are “delusional” if they think anyone will pay over £25million for Calvin Bassey.

That’s according to former Celtic hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Premier League interest in the defender.

According to Sky Sports (26 May), Aston Villa are among a number of Premier League clubs to have made enquiries about Bassey, 22, ahead of the summer window.

The report claims Rangers want in excess of £25million in order to part with the defender.

This would break the Scottish transfer record, currently held by Kieran Tierney’s move to Arsenal in 2019.

McAvennie has a “big issue” with this price tag.

“I have a big issue with that,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“If they think Tierney is in the same stratosphere as Bassey then I don’t know what to say.

“He is a good player, he has done well but he’s in that league, not a chance.

“Players are worth what people will pay for them. The club can put these figures on them, good for them, no one is going to pay it.

“I just don’t see how you can compare Bassey and Tierney. Tierney had all these awards and loads of trophies when he went to Arsenal.

“What does Bassey have? He hasn’t played as well or achieved as much as Tierney did but Rangers want the same money?

“Not for me, I don’t see that happening.

If Rangers think they are in the same category then they are more delusional than I thought.”
