Campbell delivers verdict on Rangers signing Sakala and how Gerrard plans to use him

Fashion Sakala could prove to be a vital asset for Rangers as the club pushes to reach the Champions League group stage.

That’s according to former Arsenal hitman Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Gers’ recent transfer business.

Last week, Rangers announced the pre-contract signing of Sakala from Belgian side KV Oostende.

Sakala, 24, is the club’s joint-top scorer this season with 13 goals in the Jupiler Pro League.

He mainly operates as a centre forward but is able to play on both flanks, similarly to Kemar Roofe.

Campbell has tipped Sakala to be a useful squad player, rather than someone who will lead the line on a regular basis.

“I’m sure they will be a few songs about him when the fans get back,” Campbell told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“When you have Champions League aspirations, to get through to the group stage. It stretches your squad.

“So you’re looking at signing players who can fill in, who can do a job here and there. Maybe Sakala is that type of player.

“You can never have enough firepower. If Rangers get a few injuries to key people, you’re struggling.

“He clearly knows where the goal is but he’s not prolific, he could be a good squad player.”

Rangers will kick off their first Champions League campaign in a decade in the third qualifying round this summer.

Upon joining Rangers, Sakala hailed his move as a ‘dream come true’.
