‘Can’t wait’ – Gerrard opens up on imminent Rangers arrival
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted he “can’t wait” to get started at Ibrox when he takes the reins on Friday – but refused to get carried away and talk about leading the Gers into the Champions League.
Gerrard officially gets started on June 1st after fulfilling obligations with BT Sport and Liverpool – and is looking forward to getting his “teeth into” his first job as a manager.
After host Gary Lineker joked during the coverage of the Champions League final between the Reds and Real Madrid that Gerrard could be leading the Gers into the final in three years Gerrard insisted his focus is on his first game.
“June 1st. I can’t wait to get my teeth into it,” Gerrard said during BT Sport‘s build-up to Saturday’s Champions League final.
“Don’t talk about the Champions League…just the first game.”
Football Insider verdict:
It is good to see Gerrard isn’t getting too carried away and making massive promises that he would struggle to fulfil. The Liverpool icon seems very assured in his ability to be a success at Ibrox and despite his lack of experience as a manager, his background in the game should give him a solid starting point to build from. Bringing Gary McAllister with his should be a shrewd move and gives Gerrard an experienced head beside him in the dugout as he learns the ropes. With only a few days until he officially takes the reins at Ibrox, Gers fans are getting excited by Gerrard’s imminent arrival as the Light Blues try to end Celtic’s recent dominance of Scottish football. Gerrard will have about six weeks until his first competitive game as Gers boss so does not have a huge amount of time to build a squad and get them prepared for the start of the season.
