Cash told to sit out rest of Aston Villa season after Twitter message – pundit
Noel Whelan has urged Matty Cash to sit out the rest of the season after suffering another injury blow at Aston Villa.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 23-year-old did not need to take the risk of further damage after coming off against Everton.
As quoted by the Birmingham Mail, Dean Smith admitted he feared Cash could be out of Villa’s final three games if the injury is a re-occurrence of the hamstring issue he suffered in February.
However, the right-back appeared optimistic it may be nothing serious in an update on his personal Twitter account.
Cash was substituted off just before half-time in Thursday’s 0-0 draw against Everton.
Whelan insisted the defender did not need to gamble on his fitness and should sit out the rest of the season.
Asked if alarm bells were ringing when it came to Cash’s hamstring, Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Yeah, especially at the back end of the season.
“It’s the end of the season where sometimes aches, pains and strains take their toll. The season has been pretty demanding, especially on certain players that play that wing-back role.
“You have to be explosive, you have to be box-to-box. You’re going to have to go at full pace a lot of the time to keep up with the game. It’s a very demanding role that they play these days, wing-backs.
“It might just be a hamstring that’s opened up from the last one. Sometimes they can open themselves up again, a little bit a weak spot. Another player that probably doesn’t need to be rushed back.
“With a hamstring, let him have the summer, let him recoup. Let him get that treatment he needs and get it right and mended. After that, next season, you’ll have that Matty Cash firing again.”
Cash has played 28 times in his debut Premier League season with Aston Villa.
He sat out four games between February and March with a hamstring problem.
