Kenny tips Celtic to cut losses on Barkas amid big transfer development

Celtic are likely to bin Vasilis Barkas in the summer after a debut season littered with blunders.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after The Scottish Sun reported that Greek side PAOK are considering a loan move for 26-year-old.

Barkas, a 13-time Greece international, signed for Celtic from AEK Athens in the summer for a reported £4.5million fee.

But he has started just two games since the start of 2021 after being usurped between the sticks by both Scott Bain and Conor Hazard.

Kenny suggested that Barkas has been given ample opportunities to prove himself in Glasgow and that it would be best for all parties if he moved on.

“There’s a good chance he’ll get moved out,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Willaims.

“There are only so many chances you can get away with making mistakes. There comes a time when maybe you have to move that player on.

“Maybe he hasn’t settled, maybe the language and stuff like that hasn’t helped. It all depends on which manager comes in and whether they actually can get rid of him.

“He’s been that poor so you never know. It might be best to call time on it, to be honest.”

Barkas is one of a number of unsuccessful signings ushered in by ex-Celtic recruitment chief Nicky Hammond.

Hammond resigned last week after Football Insider revealed in January that his job was hanging by a thread.
