Celtic closing in on ‘great bit of business’ after journalist’s six-figure signing update – Whelan

Noel Whelan has claimed Celtic are closing in on a potentially “great bit of business” in Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen and Leeds United forward said the 23-year-old is a low-risk signing given his price tag and experience in Europe.

According to The Scotsman’s Barry Anderson (August 19th), the Hoops are on the brink of completing the signing of the left-footed centre-half for a fee in the region of £500,000.

Scales, who has been capped five times by Ireland’s Under-21s, has a year-and-a-half remaining on his contract at Shamrock Rovers.

Whelan suggested the centre-half could have a big impact at Parkhead.

“You are looking at a figure that is a drop in the ocean for a club like Celtic,” he told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge.

“It is not much of a risk for a player who sounds like he has a lot of pedigree and has played in Europe already.

“Shamrock Rovers have always been a very successful side and they have brought through a lot of good players over the years. You do not go into the Irish league unless you believe the player has the capability of making the step up.

“It could be a great bit of business from Celtic for a centre-half who could become a permanent fixture for them.

“I bet he is hungry and he will fancy his chances if he makes the move because he knows the problems Celtic have had in defence.”
