Celtic need a ‘John Park’ style recruitment wizard to source the next generation of stars as they face losing Odsonne Edouard, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Rangers and Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the Hoops need to start getting replacements for the 23-year-old and their other potentially departing stars lined up.

As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic have slashed their asking price for Edouard to £25million after demanding £40million from suitors last summer.

It is understood the French hitman is willing to wait until the end of the season, when he will have 12 months left on his contract at Parkhead, before trying for a big-money move.

McLeish has acknowledged losing a player of Edouard’s talents would be a bitter pill for the Bhoys but insisted they risk missing out on a significant windfall if they wait too long to sell up.

McLeish told Football Insider: In terms of the reinvestment and letting a player of that quality go, we made the example of Gareth Bale leaving Spurs way, way back.

“Again, recruitment, Celtic are in a different league where they can get guys ready to play in the Premier League, like they’ve done with Virgil van Dijk and loads of other players over the past few years.

“A great, great guy who worked with me, John Park, was my chief scout at Hibs and he went to Celtic famously and brought a lot of these guys in – that’s what they have to do again.

“If Edouard’s got to go and the clock’s ticking on his contract, then they’ve got to get as much money as they can for him and already have the replacements on their radar.”

Edouard has netted 11 times in 23 appearances across all competitions and has a total of 72 goals in 151 games for the Glasgow giants.
