Celtic expert drops ‘incredible’ claim after confirmed news

Celtic can finish second in their Champions League group but will at least finish in third spot and guarantee a Europa League spot.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said the Scottish champions could have been drawn against far more difficult opponents.

After winning the Scottish Premiership last term the Celts managed to avoid the Champions League play-offs and go straight into the group stages of the competition.

In Thursday’s (31 August) group stage draw, the Scottish giants landed in Group E alongside Feyenoord, Lazio and Atletico Madrid.

With teams like Man City, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona as potential opponents, McAvennie was pleased with where the Hoops have ended up.

It is going to be incredible,” he told Football Insider.

Celtic usually get Barcelona or Real Madrid but Feyenoord by and large are still a good team but it is a game that we can win. It is not your Real Madrid or your Bayern Munich.

The Dutch have a great football philosophy but it is a game that we can go and take to them. They could have definitely had worse. When you look at who we could have got, there are so many wonderful teams out there.

Now there is a chance that we could even finish second which would be brilliant for the club. If they don’t get that they should definitely have European football after Christmas.

Finishing third is not too much to ask for but I think we could get second.
