Celtic in hunt to sign prolific striker compared to Lionel Messi – report

Celtic are in a four-way battle to sign Rubin Kazan striker Sardar Azmoun, according to a report.

Teamtalk.com is reporting that Wolves are currently favourites for the player who has been nicknamed ‘the Iranian Lionel Messi’, but that the Hoops, Everton, Leicester and Fulham are also interested in the player.

The report claims that the Hoops were first interested in the player last summer, a claim made by Kazan manager Kurban Berdyev and reported by the Scottish Sun, and are still interested in making a move for the Iranian international.

The 23-year-old joined Kazan in the summer from Rostov on a transfer, and has scored four goals in 25 appearances this season for the side that currently lie in ninth place in the Russian Premier Liga.

Azmoun has been prolific for the Iran national team, scoring 23 goals in his 31 caps.

Football Insider verdict

The Hoops will no doubt be linked with many players during the summer transfer window, and Azmoun is the latest in what will be a long line of names. It is as yet unknown if the Hoops will make a move for another striker in the transfer window, as the futures of Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard at the club are currently up in the air. Although it has to be said that if the Hoops and a Premier League side are competing for a player, then the Premier League side, even a newly promoted one like Wolves, will win the battle to sign the player, due to the money they will have.
