Celtic must offload reported contract rebel in summer after talks stall
COMMENT
Celtic must sell contract rebel Tom Rogic in the summer, rather than face the prospect of losing him on a free transfer in a year’s time.
The Daily Record recently reported that the 25-year-old midfield playmaker has held talks with the Hoops about a new deal, but as yet nothing has been agreed.
The Hoops must end the discussions with the Australian and sell him in the summer. The player would have signed the new deal before now if he was really interested in staying, and Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers will be aware that the longer the discussions drag on the less likely Rogic is to stay.
The Hoops are fortunate if the player leaves, as despite his undoubtedly qualities – most recently shown when the scored a brilliant goal in the 3-2 win over Rangers – they have other players, such as Callum McGregor, who can play in the playmaker role.
Rogic should command a decent transfer fee, and the Hoops board must make the money they receive for the player available to the Hoops boss to sign a replacement midfielder.
Rogic has for the most part been an excellent player for the Bhoys, and should he leave in the summer he will be missed, but with the Champions League qualifiers beginning in July the Hoops can’t have players in their side who aren’t 100% committed to the cause, and Rogic must depart if he isn’t willing to sign a new deal.
