Celtic news: Hutton hails Gordon Strachan as new deal talks begin

Alan Hutton has insisted Gavin Strachan has proven his doubters wrong after aiding Ange Postecoglou in the transformation of Celtic this term.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed retaining the 42-year-old coach has paid dividends for the Hoops.

A Parkhead source told Football Insider on Monday (4 April) that Celtic have opened negotiations over a new deal for Strachan.

The source explained the son of Hoops icon Gordon is highly regarded behind the scenes – and the club want to reward him for his role in the team’s transformation.

Strachan joined Celtic as a first-team coach under Neil Lennon in 2020 – but remained at the club after the Northern Irishman’s exit last summer (2021).

When asked if the assistant boss has proven his doubters wrong, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “Yeah, I think so.

“There were obviously a lot of doubters to begin with – especially after their start to this season.

“There was a lot of question marks over the likes of Strachan and John Kennedy – are they helping or hindering?

“But actually, when you think about it – Postecoglou came in, he wasn’t experienced in the league or the players – and he needed people around him who know what it’s all about.

“And people like Strachan have given him that platform to work on his ideas and his philosophy and to steer him in the right direction.

“It has worked out for Celtic.”

Celtic went into today’s clash against St Johnstone knowing a win would take them nine points clear of Rangers.
