Celtic tipped to sign striker who could reach Toney’s level after source’s update today
Alex McLeish has backed Charlie Wyke to become a Celtic fan favourite should he join from Sunderland this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager insisted the 28-year-old could would be a “darling of the crowd” if he could replicate his form at Parkhead.
As revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday (June 16th), Ange Postecoglou’s side are set for talks with the Black Cats talisman this week.
A recruitment source has added that talks are now underway and the club are set to offer the striker a long-term contract.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Russell Edge if Wyke would be a success, McLeish said: “He’s scored his goals in a lot of divisions. We’ll have to wait and see if Charlie can dominate in the Scottish league as well as he has done in the lower divisions in England.
“That would be the challenge, scoring for Celtic every week he would be the darling of the crowd.
“As you know in Scotland, sometimes strikers find it hard when they come in to play every week and they get man-marked very robustly and tightly.
“On paper it’s a good one because Celtic were linked with (Ivan) Toney a couple of years ago from Peterborough, they didn’t get him, and look what he’s doing now.
“That was one they missed and if Wyke can get anywhere near Toney’s level, he’d be a good signing also and could be the next Toney.”
Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell also backed the ‘exceptional’ striker to shine for the Scottish giants.
Wyke had a stellar season last campaign, scoring 30 goals all competitions.
Elsewhere, pundit claims Celtic could sign a ‘game-changer’ with Premier League experience.
