Centre-back may not know where his future lies, but it is not at Celtic

COMMENT

Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko is heading back to the Hoops after his loan deal with FC Midtjylland ended with the 26-year-old winning the league in his native Denmark.

The centre-back has revealed, as reported by the Daily Record, that he isn’t sure where he will be playing next season. It is highly unlikely that it will be at Celtic Park.

The Dane was a semi-regular for Brendan Rodgers in the Hoops boss’ first season in Glasgow, making 43 appearances overall.

However, a poor performance in a 2-1 win over Rangers last January seems to have knocked back Rodgers’ faith in the player, and as a result he made only two appearances for the Bhoys last season before moving back on loan to his former club.

It says it all about where he stands in the pecking order of centre-backs at Celtic Park that Rodgers didn’t even consider Sviatchneko for a place in the first-team after the 4-0 loss to Hearts.

He put Kristoffer Ajer in the team instead, and Ajer hasn’t looked back, whilst Sviatchenko’s time with the Hoops seems to have come to a crashing halt.

It would be best for all parties involved if he made his return to Denmark a permanent one, as the chances of him ever regularly featuring for the Hoops again have got to be very slim indeed.
