Champions League heavyweights plan huge bid for Tottenham 23-year-old – report
By Danny Wright
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are planning to table a huge bid for Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, according to a report.
The Sun claims that the Champions League heavyweights are set to test Spurs’ resolve with an offer with £50million for the 23-year-old, who is also said to be wanted by Manchester United.
It is understood that Bayern believe Dier could be available to leave north London, despite United having an offer of their own turned down this summer.
Tottenham are the only team in the Premier League not to have signed a new player this summer, but if they were to flog Dier for £50million, it would take their transfer income well over £100million after the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City as well as other fringe players being shown the door by Mauricio Pochettino.
The Sun also reports that Spurs have been put off by the £50million price-tag that Everton have slapped on Ross Barkley, but if they were to sell Dier they could consider bringing in the Merseyside playmaker.
Football Insider Verdict
Spurs have arguably one of the strongest first-teams in the Premier League, and they simply cannot afford to slip into the bracket of becoming a selling club. Daniel Levy has a lot of money to play around with and it’s strange that the Londoners have been so reluctant to use that to add strength in depth this summer. Spurs still need one good player added in each position to provide back up to the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier. Selling Dier would create a major void in two areas of the squad in defensive midfield and at centre-back. Bayern might be an interesting prospect for a player who is no stranger to football in continental Europe, so Tottenham should try to move quick to ensure that Dier’s head isn’t turned.
