Chelsea ‘leak’ triggered ‘staggering’ Marc Cucurella deal – pundit

The cost of Marc Cucurella’s move to Chelsea is “absolutely staggering”.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Chelsea confirmed the signing of Cucurella, 24, on Friday (5 August).

On 3 August, Brighton refuted reports that they had agreed a fee with another club amid interest from Man City and Chelsea.

However, the deal was done just 48 hours later as the Barcelona academy graduate became the club’s fourth signing of the summer.

Wenham claims the deal is “absolutely staggering” compared to Spurs’ signing of Ivan Perisic.

“I presume what happened with the Brighton and Chelsea situation was that Chelsea leaked to journalists that they had agreed a fee,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Brighton thought ‘hang on a minute’, which is why they put their own tweet out. They have ended up getting an extra £7million out of it because Chelsea tried to go early.

“Now the fee is something like £62million. £62million. Tottenham got Perisic for free. The difference in the value of that when Perisic is superior to Cucurella is absolutely staggering.

“It looks like a better deal all the time. We had it wrapped up in two days as well, from when the first reports came out.”

Perisic, 33, joined Tottenham from Inter Milan earlier in the window and made his first appearance of pre-season against Rangers on 23 July.

He scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 35 Serie A appearances last season.
