‘Chelsea to replace Robert Sanchez’: ‘Absolute’ Aaron Ramsdale update
Chelsea have been backed to replace goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with Southampton star Aaron Ramsdale in the summer transfer window by Jason Cundy.
It has been another tough season for the 27-year-old between the posts at Stamford Bridge.
Sanchez has made a number of errors for Chelsea which have even caused frustration among his teammates.
That recently saw him dropped by manager Enzo Maresca to be replaced as first-choice by Filip Jorgensen.
He though is also under fire following his part in Chelsea’s defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday evening (22 February) which is leading to discussions about potential summer transfer targets in that position.

Aaron Ramsdale touted for Stamford Bridge switch
One goalkeeper who was on the move last summer was Ramsdale, who left Arsenal to join Southampton.
It has though been a challenging time for Ramsdale with Southampton, who look destined to suffer an immediate relegation back to the Championship.
Premier League position | Played | Points |
17. Wolves | 26 | 22 |
18. Ipswich Town | 26 | 17 |
19. Leicester City | 26 | 17 |
20. Southampton | 26 | 9 |
That may lead to the England international becoming available again when the market reopens at the end of the season.
If that does prove to be the case, then Cundy would be keen to see Chelsea take advantage of that situation to add him to Maresca‘s side.
The 55-year-old believes the club will look to replace Sanchez in the summer, and will need to change the goalkeeping situation, even with Djordje Petrovic due to return from a loan spell at Strasbourg.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Blues midfielder was asked by a fan on a phone-in if he would like to see Ramsdale signed by his old club.
In response to that question, Cundy said: “I’ll definitely have Ramsdale, that’s an absolute. [Caoimhin] Kelleher at Liverpool is another that’s been looked at.
“Clearly the goalkeeping situation has been a bit of a disaster because Sanchez was given the gloves, Petrovic was sent out on loan, he ended the season last year.
“Sanchez got the gloves, and then over the last three months it’s been quite obvious that Sanchez is suffering with the amount of mistakes the amount of chances that had led to goals.
“Then you put Jorgensen in who’s probably not ready himself, he’d done well up until that and then he flaps one in…
“I think that next season they will be looking to replace Sanchez, unless of course they think that Petrovic is good enough again but clearly it’s been an issue all season, it was an issue last season, something’s got to change.”

Chelsea move for Aaron Ramsdale would be a risk
Football Insider Verdict
There is no doubt that Ramsdale is a very good goalkeeper who is more than capable of making a number outstanding saves.
However, he also looks to be destined to suffer a third relegation from the Premier League at the age of just 26.
Of course, that is far from all his fault, but he has made errors from time to time, and it will surely be hard for him to shake off so much disappointment from a mental perspective.
All of that may mean that it would be a gamble for Chelsea to move for Ramsdale, even if it is clear they need to improve their goalkeeping options.
Indeed, there is plenty of time before the window opens now for them to assess their other potential targets and options to fill that role.
