Confirmed: Pedraza agrees to contract extension
By Harvey Byrne
Last season’s Leeds loanee Alfonso Pedraza has signed a new contract at Spanish club Villarreal, it was confirmed on Friday.
The La Liga announced via both their official website and Twitter account that the 21-year-old had extended his deal to 2021.
Pedraza made the switch to Leeds in January until the end of the season after Villarreal elected to pay £300,000 to Lugo to cut his loan deal short with the side he had spent the first half of the season with.
It was also detailed that the deal with the Yorkshire club included a option to buy worth £8.5million, provided that they win promotion.
However, Leeds’ end of season collapse ensured that they could only manage a seventh place finish with Pedraza managing a return of just one goal in 14 league appearances in Garry Monk’s team.
The Spaniard has previously played five times for the Villarreal senior team and he will now be looking to gain more first team experience after his extension.
Football Insider verdict:
Out of Leeds’ loanees last summer they have already secured one of their most important players to a permanent deal in Pontus Jansson, while they have also signed Hadi Sacko who provided a suitable outlet on the wing. Now, it is felt that Leeds must put all of their efforts into acquiring Kyle Bartley from Swansea. Therefore, although showing some talent in a Whites shirt Pedraza is not that big of a miss for Leeds, especially at the £8.5million valuation and the club simply were not going to spend that much while still sitting in the Championship.
In other Leeds transfer news, personal terms are close to being agreed between this Whites first teamer and an English club.
