Conte reacts to Morata debut for Chelsea, shares what he must improve

By Harry Sykes

Antonio Conte has urged Alvaro Morata to get into shape after making his full Chelsea debut in their friendly win over Inter Milan on Saturday.

The new signing from Real Madrid played 64 minutes of the 2-1 defeat in Singapore in which the Blues had only a bizarre Geoffrey Kondogbia own goal to show for their efforts.

Morata spent most of his time in a wide left role as Michy Batshuayi spearheaded the attack in what were fiercely humid and hot conditions.

Conte was typically honest in his post-match appraisal of the Spain international, telling the official Chelsea website that the player is “working well” but must “improve his physical condition” to fit into the team’s playing style.

Chelsea used the same 3-4-3 formation that proved integral to their title triumph last season as Morata and Willian flanked front man Batshuayi.

Morata, 24, came on as a second-half substitute in the 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday and helped set up the second goal for Batshuayi.

The Spaniard was signed from Real for a club-record fee of £58million last week as Chelsea prepare to sell 2016-17 top scorer Diego Costa.

In other Chelsea news, a four-year deal was signed as this defender left the club.
