Conte should make Bergwijn U-turn at Tottenham after Sky latest – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Antonio Conte must “change his mind” about listening to offers for Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted he would be “surprised” if the 24-year-old made a Spurs exit in January.

Bergwijn made his first start under Conte as Tottenham scored a 2-1 home victory over West Ham in the League Cup on Wednesday (22 December), grabbing the opener before turning provider for Lucas Moura’s winner.

ESPN reported on `10 December that the Italian was set to sanction a January exit for the winger.

However, Sky Sports (23 December) now claim Bergwijn has played his way back into Conte’s plans after impressing against West Ham and in training.

Whelan suggested the Dutchman couldn’t have done “much more” to impress the former Chelsea boss during Wednesday’s clash.

“I think it has to change his mind,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I was surprised to hear that he was willing to let him go in the first place, he’s not really had a chance this season.

“There’s not much more you can do than score a goal and then set up another, especially when it’s your first real opportunity under a new manager. That’s all any manager can ask for. He’s shown a great attitude and desire to not give up hope.

“He can be a really valuable player for Conte, and I’d be very surprised if he were to let Bergwijn go. He’s got loads to offer.”

Tottenham

£25m signing Bergwijn is the latest Tottenham star handed a lifeline by Conte.

Dele Alli and Harry Winks both impressed in Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

In other news, an insider has revealed Tottenham could soon be ‘laughing’ amid ‘£30m’ player prediction.
