‘Crazy’: Liverpool to make Andy Robertson transfer U-turn

Liverpool are planning to offer Andy Robertson a new contract to extend his stay at Anfield beyond the end of the season despite doubts about his future.

The 31-year-old almost joined Tottenham in the January transfer window and is out of contract at the end of the year and closing in on leaving for free.

However, his performances when called upon under Arne Slot have convinced the chief decision-makers that the Scotland international still has plenty to offer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Slot sees Robertson as a valuable member of his squad both on and off the pitch.

The left-back confirmed after scoring in the Reds’ win against Wolves that he is committed to the club, and could now be offered a new deal as part of Liverpool’s transfer plans.

Andy Robertson could sign new Liverpool contract

Football Insider was told that Liverpool were planning to let Robertson go, in a move which would sum up everything that has gone wrong this season.

However, his increased role in the squad of late, combined with his leadership and experience behind the scenes, has convinced Slot of his value to the side.

Robertson’s contract situation is still up in the air,” Brown told Football Insider.

“I think they’d be crazy to let him go, in all honesty, because every time he’s picked to play he proves why he’s still such an influential part of the team.

“He showed that against Wolves again, and I think Slot is going to have to take notice.

“The plan at Liverpool was always to bring Kerkez in, get him used to the side while Robertson was still there, and then let Robertson move on.

“But he’s so influential when he plays and he’s a big voice in the dressing room, you can’t replace those types of qualities easily.

“The positive at the moment as well, is that if he plays or if he doesn’t, you’ve got that choice. If you let him go, he will need to be replaced.

“So you go out and spend big money on another left-back to compete with Kerkez, only for him to struggle, rather than sticking with a player you know will give his best?

“I think giving Robertson a contact extension, even if it’s only a year or maybe two, is the smart decision and ultimately the one Liverpool will make.”

Liverpool eye attacking changes after Mohamed Salah news

Robertson is not the only player being linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, as speculation continues to surround some of the Reds’ star names.

Both Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo have been linked with moves away in moves which could facilitate major attacking changes in Slot’s team.

However, Brown told Football Insider that Salah’s future will be key for Gakpo, as Liverpool are reluctant to let more than one of their attacking stars move on.

Much of this season’s inconsistency has stemmed from what proved to be a busy transfer window as they underwent a major overhaul of Slot’s side.

They are now keen to avoid similar mistakes, and any departing players will likely have an impact on the other sales they make in the upcoming window.
