Cristian Romero has defied Tottenham wishes after new twist – Agbonlahor

Tottenham can have no complaints with Cristian Romero joining up with the Argentina squad this week, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Romero will follow a similar training regime with his national team to what he would have if he stayed at Spurs.

The Athletic reported on Monday (21 March) the 23-year-old has joined up with Argentina despite being banned for both of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers and not being named in the initial squad.

The Argentina Football Association are hoping his ban will be reduced for one game after an appeal.

They have already qualified for the World Cup and it is claimed Tottenham are concerned about Romero joining up with the squad.

“Sounds like there might be a decent party he doesn’t want to miss out on,” Agbonlahor joked to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But no, if you have got a chance of playing then you can understand it. Football players love representing their country.

“If he knows he’s got a small chance of playing then he’s going to be over there.

“If he’s not then it would be a similar sort of training as to what he is doing at Spurs so I don’t see a problem with it, to be honest.

“Nowadays players will not be told by their club if they can go away with their country or not. They will make their own decision.”

Romero missed nine Premier League games after suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty in November last year (2021).

He has played 24 games across all competitions this season since signing, initially on loan, from Atalanta last summer.

In other news, Tottenham have set their sights on signing a £50million+ valued defender who Antonio Conte loves.
