Cristian Romero lucky to escape extended ban as ‘horrible’ Tottenham controversy analysed – pundit

Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has to be “very, very careful” with the way he tackles this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one suggested the 24-year-old was lucky not to get sent off against Southampton on Saturday.

Romero escaped punishment for a scissor tackle on Saints midfielder Oriol Romeu in the second half of Tottenham’s 4-1 win.

Referee Andre Marriner did not deem the incident worthy of a booking, let alone a red card, and VAR official Paul Tierney chose not to intervene.

Robinson claimed the “horrible” tackle gets worse with every viewing.

“It’s not a great one,” he told Football Insider.

“That style of challenge, Romero needs to be careful going forward.

“I think he mistimed it slightly and that is why he comes through with the other leg. He tries to bring his other leg around and it looks horrible. It did not look great.

“It is something going forward that he is going to have to be very, very careful of. The last thing Spurs need is him getting a straight red and getting a suspension.

“The more you look at it, the worse it gets. There is no easy way to describe it. It is not a good attempt at a tackle.

“The scissor movement is not something we want to see. You cannot dress it up.”
