Cult hero pipped to the top in five best Tottenham stars in 2008 League Cup triumph

1. Jonathan Woodgate

Tottenham appearances: 65 – Goals 3

While Woodgate might not have had the same longevity at Spurs as the other names on this list, his immediate impact was like no other.

Having signed for Tottenham less than a month before the League Cup final, he stepped straight into the side and put in a defensive masterclass against some of the most revered players the Premier League has ever seen.

Like central partner King, Woodgate dominated Drogba and Anelka up front for the Blues, while putting in some vital blocks to deny the likes of Frank Lampard and co in the midfield.

As if his contribution at the back was not enough, he proceeded to get down the other end of the pitch and score his very first Tottenham goal with a somewhat fortuitous header in extra-time – but credit must be handed out for being at the right place at the right time.

His performances at both ends of the pitch were enough for Woodgate to pick up the man of the match award – a perfect start to his career in north London.

In other Tottenham news, the club must snap up the perfect replacement for Danny Rose in the shape of an exit bound speed machine from title winners.
