Curtis Jones reacts to Anthony Gordon at Newcastle amid Liverpool transfer news

Anthony Gordon has earned the attention of Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones with the Newcastle United star’s latest social media update.

The former Everton winger was unable to play a role in the Magpies’ historic win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium after Gordon was sent off against Brighton in the FA Cup.

While it has been nothing like his 2023/24 campaign, the 24-year-old has remained an important part of Eddie Howe‘s plans at St James’ Park, notching six goals and five assists in the Premier League.

His performances over the last couple of seasons have caught the attention of rivals in the division, with Liverpool one of the teams interested in Gordon’s signature in multiple transfer windows.

It is understood that Newcastle are in a much better position in terms of PSR, meaning a move to Anfield is far more unlikely than it was during the winter transfer window [The Athletic], unless Luis Diaz leaves Liverpool.

Taking to Instagram [1 April], Gordon posted a series of images over the last few weeks with Newcastle, with the caption: “A good few weeks,” which seemingly gained some traction online.

Jones liked the post and replied with crossed fingers and a heart emoji, while Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke commented: “Not bad at all”.

Eddie Howe cannot afford to lose St James’ Park stars during summer transfer window

Football Insider verdict

Gordon is not the only one of Newcastle’s superstars to be linked with an exit before the end of the season, with Alexander Isak being heavily linked with a move to Liverpool.

Nick Pope, Bruno Guimaraes, and Callum Wilson are all being subjected to transfer interest from clubs in England, but with Howe only just beginning his journey with the Magpies, it would be incredibly difficult to rebuild after losing several stars.

Gordon has spoken openly about his family’s love for the Reds, and even despite his history with Everton, a move to Anfield can never be ruled out after nearly making the move before.

Losing some of his most important players could also force Howe into taking the England job once Thomas Tuchel finishes with the Three Lions, which could be as soon as after the 2026 World Cup.

For now, however, the main focus at St James’ Park will be attempting to qualify for Champions League football, and after lifting the EFL Cup, all the momentum should be on their side.
