Darwin Nunez avoids red card after ‘reckless’ Man United tackle – ex-PGMOL chief

Michael Oliver was right not to dismiss Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez despite his reckless challenge on Man United defender Matthijs de Ligt, Keith Hackett has insisted.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the foul failed to meet the criteria for violent conduct and the ultimate decision of a yellow card, confirmed by VAR official Chris Kavanagh, was correct.

This comes after footage emerged on social media showing the 25-year-old slamming into the defender with no intention of playing the ball, leaving him on the floor.

However, Hackett explained the foul was seen as “reckless” rather than violent.

Arne Slot’s side were held to a 2-2 draw against their fierce rivals at Anfield after goals from Lisandro Martinez, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Amad Diallo.

However, the game was not without its controversies after the Reds were awarded a penalty for a De Ligt hand-ball while Nunez avoided punishment for his incident.

Liverpool fell below the impressive level they have shown so far this season, failing to take advantage of dropped points by both Chelsea and Arsenal to extend their lead at the top of the table.

However, should Nunez have seen red for his foul on De Ligt, the result could have been even worse for Slot’s side who struggled on the day.

The forward has been a source of frustration for the Reds after his inconsistent performances this season, and many are growing tired of his lack of impact in games.

Often called upon to come from the bench, questions about a potential red card have overshadowed talk surrounding his ongoing issues in front of goal after another underwhelming cameo display.

Now, Hackett has insisted that the officials were correct not to dismiss Uruguay striker despite calls from the travelling fans.

The challenge was reckless by Nunez,” he told Football Insider.

“The santion of a yellow card was the correct decision by referee Michael Oliver.

“It failed to meet the criteria for violent conduct.”
