Dave King calls for SFA to suspend Celtic-supporting SFA member after insulting Rangers fans
Dave King has called for the SFA to suspend Gary Hughes after the SFA board member called Rangers fans “the great unwashed”.
Despite the slur being said 12 years ago in a magazine interview, King is furious and has called not only for Hughes’ suspension, but also whether any other SFA members were aware of the remarks.
The insult was made in an interview with trade mag The Publican in 2006.
Talking in the Daily Record, King said: “I can confirm receipt of information, that would appear to be credible, and which merits immediate and thorough independent investigation.
“Mr Hughes should be suspended pending this investigation.
“I also believe steps must be taken to ascertain whether any other SFA individuals were aware of what Mr Hughes said about Rangers supporters before he was appointed a non-executive director of the governing body in 2015.
“It is important to discover if there has been a breach of the SFA duties and responsibilities to all clubs.”
Football Insider verdict:
Hughes is fighting for his career and it doesn’t look good for him at this stage. The remarks were made before he was appointed onto the SFA board, but it is crucial that all board members are seen as being independent and the remarks he made about Rangers fans – in jest or otherwise – make this tough to square up. He probably wouldn’t have been expecting any measure of support from King but this hardline approach from the Rangers chairman puts a lot of pressure to act on the SFA. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them acting quickly to nip this in the hud before it becomes a bigger issue than it is already. Luckily for other members of the SFA, the interview Hughes gave was in such a low-key trade mag, that it would be easy for them to claim ignorance. Hughes, though, will probably have to go and it’s a good lesson in the modern world that what you said in your past will not necessarily stay there.
