Des Kelly reveals what Gerrard said about Rangers at 3am today after session with BT Sport team
By Richard Parks
Steven Gerrard discussed the possibility of becoming Rangers manager with his BT Sport colleagues after a session that went on until 3am today, presenter Des Kelly has revealed on talkSPORT.
The BT team, including Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand, were in Rome on Wednesday night as Liverpool sealed their place in the Champions League final despite a 4-2 defeat to Roma.
The broadcaster’s chief reporter Kelly confirmed to the Alan Brazil sports breakfast programme the Anfield legend was quizzed in the early hours of this morning about his talks with Gers.
Kelly said: “It was discussed yes, that was later on.”
Asked by Celtic-supporting host Brazil if Gerrard wanted the job, Kelly added: “He said he’s had talks and he’s very positive about what he’s heard so far.”
The former England captain remains the bookies favourite for the role vacated by axed boss Graeme Murty earlier this week.
Brazil asked: “Do you think there’s a chance he’ll take it?”
Kelly replied: “Yeah of course there is. It’s an opportunity. I don’t know the ins and outs of the Rangers finances but I would want a great deal of information before taking the job.
“I think it’s one of those jobs…it sounds very enticing. But you’d want to look behind the façade.”
Former Scotland star Brazil then quizzed Kelly on the possibility of Liverpool Under-18s coach Gerrard taking some of the club’s top prospects on loan at Ibrox.
Kelly said: “I have no idea. At 3am I don’t think we were talking about that kind of stuff.”
Football Insider verdict:
Who can blame Gerrard for celebrating Liverpool’s progress to the Champions League final until the early hours? As an employee and icon of the club, he is a dyed-in-the-wool red. The question everyone in British football wants to know, will he soon be a dyed-in-the-wool Light Blue? It appears Gerrard dropped a few hints after some shandies in Rome last night, and the dutiful Kelly has passed that on to the nation, while at the same time admitting that the 37-year-old might be a bit blurry eyed when he resumes talks today with Rangers chiefs. There is still some finer points to be smoothed out, according to the man himself, but it appears he is braced to accept one of British football’s greatest challenges and light the blue touchpaper for a thrilling new rivalry next season with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, his former manager at Anfield.
